5th Grade Parent Information Night
|
Attendance & Early Dismissal |
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Regular, daily attendance is not only a requirement but is also essential to your child’s academic success. We have noticed that some students are being picked up early from school on a frequent basis. Please be mindful that early dismissals can affect your child’s attendance record and cause them to miss valuable instructional time.
Per district guidance, five (5) unexcused early dismissals (UEDs) count as one absence for truancy purposes. Once a student accumulates 25 UEDs, the family will receive a 5-day attendance letter.
If your child has a doctor’s appointment, please make every effort for your child to attend school before or after the appointment, when possible. A medical appointment for only part of the school day does not excuse a full-day absence.
Thank you for partnering with Deerwood Elementary School of Innovation to ensure your child attends school regularly and receives the full benefit of daily instruction.

The Zones of Regulation helps children to manage difficult emotions, known as ‘self-regulation’. Self-regulation can go by many names such as ‘self-control’, ‘impulse management’ and ‘self-management’.
We want students at DWES to grow into successful teenagers and adults. Teaching students at a young age about managing their feelings will support them in later life so that they don’t turn to negative coping strategies which affect their mental and physical wellbeing.
We aim to help students to:
- Recognize when they are in the different Zones and learn how to change or stay in the Zone they are in.
- Increase their emotional vocabulary so they can explain how they are feeling.
- Recognize when other people are in different Zones, thus developing better empathy.
- Develop an insight into what might make them move into the different Zones.
- Understand that emotions, sensory experiences (such as lack of sleep or hunger) and the environment might influence which Zone they are in.
- Develop problem-solving skills and resilience.
- Identify a range of calming and alerting strategies that support them (known as their personal ‘toolkit’).
